Magic the Gathering Arena is a free to play digital collective card game developed and published by Wizards of the Coast. Wizards is one of the clients for Craftsman+ a creative technology company I was interning for during my placement year.
This was one of the first clients I had worked with during the internship where I started off resizing and localizing static concept. As the role evolved my responsibilities grew and I was entrusted to create my own static concepts.
For one of the brief's it stated I had to portray an emotionally impactful moment that happened in the MTG story and it had to be linked to gameplay. The target audience was new game players specifically those who liked fantasy stories.
Initial Draft for Concept

This was version 1 which was sent to my Creative Director for feedback. He stated that the typography order needed to be changed and the gameplay in the screens should be switched. In addition to this, he asked me to add in Bola's avatar to make a connection to the gameplay.

This is version 2 which was approved by my Creative Director and sent to the client for review.

After Client Review
Although the static was eye-catching, the client thought it wasn't hitting an emotionally impactful moment and recommended a more recent story art to be used. Therefore, I went back to the drawing board and came up with this.

This version was approved by the client!
